One pound a meal appeal
Last year we launched a Lunch Club, ‘£1 a meal appeal’. Appeal envelopes were sent out to 43 participated Thai restaurants in Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire, Rugby and Birmingham during Valentine, Mother’s day and Easter. This project is a result of a personal experience by one of our volunteers at Wat Ban-pleang orphanage, a home to 98 orphans and impoverished children. Due to lack of financial support during weekend and bank holidays, food was always short and innutritious for orphans at Wat Ban-pleng. They rely solely upon donations given through the temple, so we have decided to adopt Wat Ban-pleng to be the first beneficiary of our lunch club and will receive £2,600 (over 160,000 bahts) during the year 2008.
Little Siam Trust’s first scholars - 2008
This year for the first time we are proud to award eight orphans and impoverished children with Little Siam Scholarships.
Suksasongkhor School is a group of 3 residential orphanage/schools covering the North, Central and South of Thailand. Children here are either orphans or from impoverished backgrounds. To qualify for a place at Suksasongkhor means the children have no financial means to pay for mainstream school. The school offers the national curriculum and additional life skills to prepare them with basic skills for work. Unfortunately for the academically bright ones who would be able to study at college or university but were unable to as they cannot afford the academic fees – which sometimes means that these bright kids would end up working on a rice farm or in a factory. ‘Relieving poverty through education is our motto’. So year 2008 is an historical date for Little Siam Trust in achieving our goal by awarding 8 bright children our first scholarships.
The academic cost in Thailand varies depending on the subject chosen at each university. On an average, 5,000 bahts (£85) is required for entrance and registration fees plus 20,000 bahts (£340) as a fee for a whole accademic year.
Little Siam Trust have committed to sponsor 8 scholarships for the next 5 years. If you feel passionate and wish to be a part with Little Siam Trust, of making the dream comes true for these bright children. Please fill in the form here. Just only £30 per month, you will be named on their scholarship certificate and receive regular progress report from the scholar.
